What is Property Protection?
Property Protection is a crime prevention program that is operated by McMaster Security Services. This program is designed to promote the use of Operation Provident on campus
Keep moveable assets and equipment secure by:
- Routinely checking status of assets
- Properly locking doors
- Storing portable items such as laptops and cameras in locked cabinets.
- Maintain control of keys
- Install alarms systems in high risk areas
- Departments need to maintain a key inventory and confirm quarterly
- Report suspicious behaviours to security immediately. (Panic button symbol)
Using an electronic engraver, mark all property with an identifiable number. For departments this would be your Operation Provident Number, for personal property this would be your drivers license number or any number that is traceable back to you.
The number should be readily visible without marring the appearance of the items. A second number (hidden) is recommended.
- Remember to record the make, model and serial number and keep this information in a safe place.
Most departments on campus have their own engraver, or one can be borrowed from Security Services by contacting 905.525.9140 ext 24281.
What Should I Engrave?
- A.V. Equipment
- Handheld Computers
- Fax Machines
- Printers, Scanners
Operation Provident is a national numbering system. It is a property identification system that is designed to discourage theft and aid in the recovery and identification of stolen property. This number will assist any police officer across Canada to quickly determine the ownership of recovered property. This system also acts as a deterrent against theft. Operation Provident is used on all University owned equipment.
The Operation Provident number that has been assigned to McMaster University through the Crime Prevention Branch of the Hamilton Police is OP5 046 800. All University property needs to be marked with this number to comply with the University’s Procedures related to Tracking, Loss, Damage and Disposition of University Assets. In addition to this number, a three digit suffix has been assigned by the Security Services to each Department. This unique number is used to further identify the property to a specific department.
